The town has approximately 58,000 residents, which is projected to grow significantly over the next 10 years (70,000 people).Aurora has grown in terms of industry and population over the years and has been listed as one of the top 25 places to live in Canada by MoneySense Magazine. Much of Aurora’s history describes how the area was successful in expanding from a village into an urbanized town.

In its early years, the town of Aurora was originally calledMachell’s Corner, named after a local merchant. It was a community of primarily Quaker settlers. By late 1850, postmaster Charles Doan renamed the town as Aurora, the Greek goddess of dawn. Originally (1863), Aurora was incorporated as a village, since then it has expanded its boundaries, replacing its country system of York with a new regional government. Aurora now functions as an education centre and is home to Saint Andrew’s College and many other educational institutions. These educational facilities range from daycares to universities and colleges. Aurora not only offers its residents with word class education, but also several recreational activities to keep the town busy.

Aurora offers its residents many amenities and enough variety to keep the community members engaged. The town has about 62 parks that encompasses more than 800 acres allowing for plenty of recreational programs and space for tennis courts, basketball courts, soccer fields, lawn bowling, and much more. Some of the more well known parks in Aurora include Ada Johnson Park, Confederation Park, and Sheppard’s Bush Conservation Area. There are also 57km of pathways and trails that Aurora maintains, which offers a great view of the community to those walkers, joggers, and cyclists. Through such activities, Aurora hopes to create more unity among its residents, as it is an aspect the town prioritizes.

The town is best known for bringing its residents together through its community events. These events are throughout the year, some include Arctic Adventure (Winter), Easter Egg Hunt (Spring), and Street Festivals (Summer) with over 500 vendors and live music. These events are held in areas that are most convenient for residents and can easily be accessed to through Aurora’s public transit services.

Travelling in and out of Aurora is made easy with its quick access to public transits and highways. Go Transit helps residents commute with ease around Aurora and the rest of GTA with its busses and trains going to downtown Toronto. Highway 404 acts a major route that connects Aurora residents to GTA as well. Moreover, Aurora plans on bringing train services in the future between Aurora and Union Station.
