The city of Guelph was first home to a First Nations community called the Attawandaron. They lived in longhouses that were surrounded by fields of corn. Years later, the first Superintendent of the Canada Company, John Galt, decided to design and transform the town to resemble a European city to attract more settlers and farmers. This included broader main streets and narrow side streets, which can still be seen today.

Galt had constructed “The Priory,” which was one of the first structures to house early settlers and the Canada Company office. It was later sold to the Guelph Junction Railway, which was built to compete with the Grand Trunk, and later leased to the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). By 1908, the city council had prompted CPR to build a new station to allow for the city’s expansion. During this time, CPR had decided to demolish the building and replace it with a more modern one. However, mayor George Sleeman bought it from the CPR  to preserve it as a museum and tourist attraction. Eventually, The Priory began to fall apart and was demolished on May 4th, 1926.

Residents and visitors can view Victorian era buildings and learn about Guelph’s history when exploring the heart of the city. In Downtown Guelph, you will be able to see limestone architecture, heritage buildings, and boutique shops.

Today, Guelph is a vibrant and engaging city surrounded by rolling hills and the home of nearly 113,000 residents. It is in close proximity to Toronto and an even closer to Hamilton and Kitchener. Much of the city is characterized by 19th century buildings such as the City Hall and Church of Our Lady. These limestone buildings also dominate its skyline.

The city places an emphasis on the wellbeing of its residents and the environment. It has taken many initiatives to engage and unite the community and build stronger relationships. One of the major initiatives include Guelph Wellbeing (2011-2014) which helped track community wide well-being.

Guelph is home to Conestoga College and University of Guelph. It is also situated close to Wilfrid Laurier University and University of Waterloo. With so many educational facilities nearby, it is understandable as to why Guelph was named one of the smartest and safest communities in Canada by MoneySense.

Guelph offers its residents several transit services to help them reach where they want to go. Some transit systems include the GO Train, VIA Rail, and the Greyhound Bus, allowing Guelph’s residents to have an easy and smooth commute.
